Recipe Wednesday:Healthy Sweet & Savory Nuts





 To Your Good Health in 2012!  We are happy to bring you our first "healthy" recipe for 2012! After so many,way too many Holiday indulgences, it has become a goal of ours to get back into a healthy eating pattern and to maintain it as a lifestyle. So, today we bring you our version of Sweet and Savory Nuts.


 Before we move on to the recipe, we want to share with you the nutritional value of the KEY ingredients in the recipe.

Nuts: nuts may help lower cholesterol, partly by replacing less healthy foods in the diet nuts contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats known to benefit the heart the omega-3 fats found in walnuts may protect against irregular heart rhythm nuts are rich in arginine, a substance that may improve blood vessel function other nutrients in nuts (such as fiber and vitamin E) may also help lower cardiovascular risk. source

Olive Oil: Reduce blood pressure. Inhibit the growth of some cancers. Benefit people at risk for or with diabetes. Lessen the severity of asthma and arthritis. Actually help your body maintain a lower weight. Source.



Savory Nuts Recipe
This recipe is an adaptation from Simply Sugar and Gluten Free

13 oz. raw mixed nuts
1 tablespoon olive oil
Garlic, Onion powder to your taste
Sea Salt to your taste

Preheat oven to 350. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. In a medium bowl place mixed nuts, oil, spices and salt. Mix well. Pour onto baking sheet and spread nuts out. Place in oven for 15 minuets. Allow to cool and enjoy.



 We placed our Savory Nuts in a jar and decided to make up some labels .We used Cathe Holden's Apothecary labels. We did not intend these as gifts, although they certainly can be. We just wanted to have a nice reminder on the jar.



Sweet Nuts Recipe
This recipe is an adaptation from Simply Sugar and Gluten Free

Cinnamon and Sea Salt to taste

Cinnamon: Preliminary results from studies have indicated that cinnamon has anti fungal, antibacterial and anti parasitic properties. Cinnamon has been found to be effective in fighting vaginal yeast infections, oral yeast infections, stomach ulcers and head lice. (Source)

 Excellent source of manganese, dietary fiber, iron and calcium.( Source)
Doctors have performed studies that show that just smelling cinnamon improves our memory and performance of certain tasks. (Source)

 Agave Nectar: Contains saponins and fructans. According to Dr. Sahelian, saponins, which are found on quinoa and many plant roots, including ginseng, have anti-inflammatory and immune system-boosting properties, including antimicrobial capability. In fact, the Aztecs used agave syrup to treat wounds because of its antibacterial properties. (Source)


 These are not overly, sickening sweet. They have just the right amount of natural tasting sweet to satisfy the sweet craving.


We had to pretty up our Sweet Nut Mix too with the Cathe Holden's Apothecary labels.

So lets start this New Year off by establishing AND keeping good eating habits that will become a lifestyle of eating! Be inspired, get creative and healthy!
