Homemade Vanilla Extract & Brown Paper Packages

Making homemade vanilla extract has been on our "hurry up and get to it list" for awhile now. Glad we finally hurried up and got to it.

Back in early September we made our batch of vanilla extract knowing that it had to steep for at least 3 months and that these precious little bottles of heaven would make perfect Christmas gifts.

You can use this idea a couple of ways: Make the vanilla extract up and give it as gifts with a little note saying, "Ready to use on date". {should steep for at least 3 months} OR make them up in time for gift giving next year.

Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe

4 oz. amber colored glass bottles like these

Organic vanilla beans like these you will need about 2-3 per bottle

Vodka or Bourbon {any brand and enough to fill your bottles with. We made 1/2 of our bottles with vodka and 1/2 with bourbon}

Vanilla Extract printable labels from Live Laugh Rowe

Full size white sticker/label paper

Using clean and dry bottle, place vanilla beans in bottles.

Fill bottles with alcohol

Seal tightly

Place bottles in a cool, dry and dark cupboard for 3 months or longer. At least once per week make time to gently turn the bottles side to side and replace.

After steeping time is up you can apply label.

Those special little touches as simple as a piece of twine wrapped and tied on the bottle are the details that say so much.

Brown Paper Packages Tied Up In String
"These are a few of our favorite things"

Brown lunch sacks as many as you need, or brown crafting paper on a roll

Bakers twine or string

Washi tape or other decorative tape

Open the bag and carefully place your bottle of homemade vanilla extract lying down on it's side in the bottom of the bag.

Roll the bag around the bottle and fold under the rough edge and use tape to secure the fold.

Use as much string as desired and tie it around your brown paper package.

And keep on doing the same thing until all your bottles of extract are wrapped.

We don't know anyone who would not love a homemade bottle of vanilla extract to use in recipes. Not sure which is more fun, giving the extract or receiving it!

So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
