Health Tip: Rosemary

A Rosemary Legend. One of the loveliest of all herbal legends is the story of why rosemary has blue flowers. When the holy family fled into Egypt, a weary Mary spread her cloak on a white flowered rosemary. The flowers miraculously changed to the blue of Mary’s cloak. The Spanish name for rosemary is romero, or pilgrims plant, and derives from this legend. For botanical accuracy there is a species with white flowers, but the rest bloom in shades of blue. {source}

Rosemary:The Energizer: Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign found that a nutrient unique to the herb {called carnosol} boosts the activity of a liver enzyme responsible for flushing fatigue-causing toxins from the body. It also supports the conversion of fat into energy. 

We are looking forward to the many ways we can incorporate Rosemary more and more into a healthy lifestyle. So to begin with, we have a Rosemary Rub for meat, fish or poultry. Rosemary has some very health minded friends in the mix as well: Garlic and Lemon.

                        To make the Rosemary Rub you will need the following:

Fresh cut Rosemary. Put some in a little vase of water and the scent will be wonderful in the house. If you currently do not grow Rosemary, may we suggest that you give it a try. It is very hardy and every Italian home always has a couple plants in the garden.

                                                            Fresh garlic


                                Prepared stone ground mustard

                     Strip 2-3 tablespoons worth of Rosemary from the stem{s} and chop.

                                         Press three garlic cloves in garlic press

                                                 One tablespoon of mustard

                                          One- two tablespoons of fresh lemon zest

                                   One tablespoon olive oil and one tablespoon Agave nectar

                                                Place all ingredients in a small dish

                                               Add to taste salt and pepper

 Season your choice of meat, fish or poultry with salt and pepper. We happen to have a Tri-Tip Roast we used our rub on.

                                                  Apply rub on over your meat

 Rub on evenly and enjoy the scent as you do. Cook your meat as desired and enjoy. If you make extra rub keep it in a covered container for up to a week.

So when you want a good, natural boost of energy, try a little fresh Rosemary to your meals. Bring it into your home like flower bouquets and enjoy the uplifting scent. Be inspired, get creative!

  2. I didn't know the history of rosemary, but I have a bunch in my garden. Thanks for the recipe. We have used ours as scewers for kabobs...just remove the leaves and use the stem as a scewer.

  3. I LOVE rosemary! I grow it in our backyard and every time I walk by I draw in a deep breath and enjoy the lovely fragrance. This rub looks amazing! And I'm loving the idea from the comment above about using the stems as skewers - never thought of that before! It would even add more flavor - love it!   4. I love rosemary. I gave a few sprigs off my plant to a friend one time and she left it in her car. It was hot summer and took weeks for the rosemary smell to leave.
